P. pacificus has been developed as a comparative model system to C. elegans for the investigation of evolutionary mechanisms of developmental change in nematodes (Sommer, 2006). In its natural environment, P. pacificus exists in a necromenic relationship with the oriental beetle Exomala orientalis (Herrmann et al., 2007).

Pristionchus pacificus is a small, free-living roundworm found in association with scarab beetles and Colorado potato beetles. It is estimated to have diverged from C. elegans 200-300 million years ago and retains many similar traits. P. pacificus is a model organism for developmental biology particularly in the analysis of vulval formation. P. pacificus, for example, is associated with the oriental beetle Exomala orientalisin the United States and Japan10. At the beginning of this association, known as necromeny, nonfeeding dauer larvae actively invade the beetle. P. pacificus has been developed as a comparative model system to C. elegans for the investigation of evolutionary mechanisms of developmental change in nematodes (Sommer, 2006). In its natural environment, P. pacificus exists in a necromenic relationship with the oriental beetle Exomala orientalis (Herrmann et al., 2007).

Like C. elegans, P. pacificus is a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite with a small percentage of male offspring, which can mate with hermaphrodites and thus allow genetic experimentation and facilitate recombination between different lineages.

It is estimated to have diverged from C. elegans 200-300 million years ago and retains many similar traits.

The analysis of the P. pacificus has provided ecological information about this organism. It was determined that the genome of P. pacificus is larger than of the widely studied nematode C. elegans. It was predicted that the genome of P. pacificus contains more than 26,000 protein coding genes. P. pacificus is a model system in evolutionary developmental biology, and analysis of vulva formation has revealed substantial differences between P. pacificus and C. elegans 6,7,8,9. Pristionchus pacificus is a small, free-living roundworm found in association with scarab beetles and Colorado potato beetles.
